Mt Fuji watches over much of the region. There are spectacular ways to admire the slumbering volcano without climbing it (though you can do that too). Head to Fuji Five Lakes and see Fuji framed with cherry blossoms in spring. Or glimpse its snow-capped peak through the sulphur smoke in Hakone.

Kanto's centrepiece, Tokyo, has it all. The energetic high-tech metropolis of cutting-edge museums and street fashion is balanced out with traditional back streets and park-like temples for a peaceful escape. Even everyday activities like snacking from convenience stores and zipping about on local trains are simple pleasures in Tokyo.

To explore Kanto from the capital, relax on direct ferries to the Ogasawara Islands (it's paradise!) or bullet trains to the beaches and jagged cliffs of Izu. A giant bronze Buddha awaits you in the hills of Kamakura. And you can feast your way through each prefecture's dishes from *himokawa* (wide udon noodles) in Gunma, to grilled wild eel in Chiba.

Tokyo steals the show in Kanto, but the region is packed with other fascinating towns. Nikko shines with a temple complex in lush forest. Nearby, dip into *onsen* hot springs in Nasu or Gunma prefecture. Then relax into traditional life along the Edo-era streets of Kawagoe or the canals of Sawara.
