Located 600km north of Adelaide in the ruggedly spectacular northern Flinders Ranges, this 610sq km multi award-winning Wilderness Sanctuary was founded by the Sprigg family in 1968 and continues to operate to this day with a strong emphasis on science, education and conservation to enable us, as custodians, to preserve this priceless and unique wilderness and its inhabitants into the future.Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary offers an array of immersive natural experiences. Visitors can explore the rugged landscape through the Ridgetop Tour, which is a highlight, providing access to some of the most remote parts of the sanctuary.Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary was officially designated as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary in July 2023, recognising its exceptionally dark and pristine skies which are optimal for astronomical observations and preserving the natural night environment. There are only 2 certified International Dark Sky Sanctuaries in Australia. The importance of such sanctuaries extends beyond just providing spectacular stargazing
opportunities. They are crucial for protecting wildlife that depends on natural darkness for survival and minimising the adverse health effects on humans caused by light pollution.Visitors to Arkaroola can experience its dark skies through several astronomy-related activities. The sanctuary offers guided tours of the night sky, which can include using state-of-the-art telescopes at their observatory for a close-up view of celestial bodies. For a more immersive experience, guests can participate in the "Under the Stars" experience, where they can recline in specially designed chairs that align them with the night sky as it's being discussed by astronomy guides.
