Go for a super scenic swim at Merewether Ocean Baths, the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere. Built in 1935 and set right on the coast, they're a stunning, family-friendly place for a dip. Get there at sunrise for an unbeatable photo op. There are also the nearby Newcastle Ocean Baths, which are an icon of Art Deco style.
Head to the lookout at Fort Scratchley between May and November to see humpback whales making their annual journey north along the Newcastle coastline. The grassy headland is the perfect place for a picnic and a panoramic view of the ocean and the 'humpback highway'. Other good viewing spots include Bar Beach Cliff, the Newcastle Memorial Walk and the obelisk at King Edward Park. If you want to get up super close, book one of the many whale-watching tours available in the area.
Explore the past, present and future of Newcastle at the award-winning Newcastle Museum. There are three permanent exhibitions showcasing the history, industry and technology of the city in exciting and interactive ways, with guided tours and activities for kids.
