Ride the Wellington Cable Car

Save yourself a steep walk and jump on Wellington's bright red cable car, connecting Lambton Quay in the city centre to the suburb of Kelburn, high on the hill. It's a quick but lovely ride through the terraced houses of Kelburn to the lookout, where you'll have uninterrupted views of the harbour and the hills beyond. There's plenty to do at the top as well – wander through the Botanic Gardens, space out at the Carter Observatory or jump on the free shuttle to the Zealandia eco-sanctuary.

Go bird-watching at Zealandia

Zealandia is home to native birdlife like the tīeke (saddleback).

Go looking for some of New Zealand's famous bird life at Zealandia, a 500ha urban ecosanctuary in the heart of Wellington. Explore the lush forests and scenic reservoir while keeping your eye out for takahē swamphens, the raucous kākā parrot and the tuatara, a dinosaur-like reptile. Come back after dusk for a guided night tour and you might even spot a kiwi.
