As the saying goes, you can't beat Wellington on a good day! This harbourside capital offers stunning landscapes and outdoorsy fun, as well as cultural kicks from its many museums, galleries and festivals. It's also home to more than its fair share of fabulous cafés, restaurants, bars and breweries.
Deepen your local knowledge at the innovative, interactive Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Spend a leisurely day exploring the history of New Zealand, delving into the extraordinary natural environment, Māori and Pasifika culture and important works of art. Don't miss the spectacular views over Wellington Harbour from the striking marae (meeting ground) on the top floor.
Save yourself a steep walk and jump on Wellington's bright red cable car, connecting Lambton Quay in the city centre to the suburb of Kelburn, high on the hill. It's a quick but lovely ride through the terraced houses of Kelburn to the lookout, where you'll have uninterrupted views of the harbour and the hills beyond. There's plenty to do at the top as well – wander through the Botanic Gardens, space out at the Carter Observatory or jump on the free shuttle to the Zealandia eco-sanctuary.
Go looking for some of New Zealand's famous bird life at Zealandia, a 500ha urban ecosanctuary in the heart of Wellington. Explore the lush forests and scenic reservoir while keeping your eye out for takahē swamphens, the raucous kākā parrot and the tuatara, a dinosaur-like reptile. Come back after dusk for a guided night tour and you might even spot a kiwi.
