Dunedin, with its castle, breweries and windswept coastline, is a slice of Scotland Down Under. Get a taste of the city's vibrant student buzz, thriving music scene and grand Victorian architecture, or get out of town and explore the rugged south coast of the South Island.
Explore the exquisite interiors and rolling gardens of Larnach Castle, New Zealand's only castle. Built high above the harbour in 1871 and restored to its original Victorian glory in the 1960s, it's a beloved Dunedin institution and a must-visit. Take the self-guided tour and learn about the castle's sometimes scandalous history, then really get into the spirit with a High Tea at the Ballroom Café.
This stunning, white-sand beach just south of the city centre is a great spot for a sunny day out. Go for a swim or a surf, then find a great bar or restaurant along the Esplanade to sit back and enjoy the view. If the water's a bit chilly or the surf is too intimidating, don't worry – you can slip into the warmth of the historic St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool instead.
Make your way to Otago Museum, a wonderland of culture, nature and science, all within walking distance of the city centre. Spend a fascinating afternoon exploring exhibitions covering everything from sea monsters to modern art to indie rock, and don't miss the indoor tropical forest, complete with 5m waterfall, a sky bridge and a thousand rainforest butterflies.
