Straddling the magnificent Waikato River, Hamilton boasts the best of both worlds. It has all the urban perks – culture, cuisine, nightlife and a lively events calendar – as well as outdoorsy attractions galore.
Stroll or cycle the scenic riverside pathways, wander the captivating Hamilton Gardens or have a picnic by Lake Rotoroa. Get caffeinated at one of the city’s many top-notch cafés, and explore its vibrant bar scene. Check out colourful street art and sculptures, visit the excellent Waikato Museum, and wax nostalgic at the Classic Car Museum (complete with 1950s-style diner).
Hamilton is also ideally placed for easy daytripping. Half an hour to the west, you’ve got the gnarly surf and dramatic coastline of Raglan. The magical Waitomo Caves are an hour to the south, while Hobbiton – a must-see for Tolkien fans – lies 45 minutes to the east. And Auckland is less than two hours away to the north.
