Limits on wheelchair assistance

We can only take two customers requiring wheelchair assistance on Airbus A320/A321 and domestic Boeing 787 flights. This means it is important that you request wheelchair assistance at the booking stage so that we can tell you if the limit has been reached on your preferred flight.

Where there are already two customers requiring wheelchair assistance on the flight that you wish to book, Jetstar can provide the following alternatives upon request:

• moving you to an earlier or later flight where the limit has not been met at no extra charge;
• re-routing you to your intended destination at no extra charge; or
• cancelling the booking and providing a full refund

We can take up to four battery-powered wheelchairs on a Boeing 787 international flight, though we reserve the right to lower the limit if there are special circumstances.

Limits on checking in wheelchairs and mobility aids

Mobility aids include, but are not limited to, equipment such as manual wheelchairs, battery-powered wheelchairs and electric scooters.

Two mobility aids can be carried free of charge as checked baggage per customer, in addition to any checked baggage allowance. The following conditions apply:

• only one battery-powered mobility aid (including battery-powered wheelchairs) can be carried free of charge as checked baggage due to loading restrictions. You will need to get approval from Qantas dangerous goods before you can check-in your battery-powered mobility aid
• the equipment must be for your own personal use
• the equipment must be within the size and weight limits set out below

The oversized item fee and excess baggage fees do not apply to mobility aids and wheelchairs that meet the above conditions.

For US flights only: on flights to and from the US, if you need a mobility aid or assistive device you can travel with an unlimited number of these devices as checked baggage and they don’t count towards your checked baggage allowance.

Maximum dimensions for mobility aids and wheelchairs as checked baggage

Mobility aids and wheelchairs must be the following size or smaller:

• flights on a Boeing 787 – 1.5m (width) x 1.6m (height) x 1.5m (length)
• flights on an Airbus A320, A321 – 1.4m (width) x 1.0m (height) x 1.4m (length)

Maximum weight for mobility aids and wheelchairs as checked baggage

Each item must be 32kg or less, except for wheelchairs or mobility aids that can travel in the upright position in freewheel mode (which may exceed 32kg).

Items above 32kg which cannot travel in the upright position in free wheel mode must be carried as freight at standard freight rates.

Mobility aids and wheelchairs (including manual wheelchairs, battery-powered wheelchairs and battery-powered scooters) cannot be carried in the aircraft cabin as carry-on baggage. All spare wheelchair batteries will need to be carried as per Qantas dangerous good requirements opens in new window.

Mobility aids and assistive devices on US flights only

If you need a mobility aid or assistive device on flights to and from the US, you can travel with an unlimited number of these devices as checked baggage and they don’t count towards your checked baggage allowance.
