Why Aussies say Whitehaven Beach, Queensland is their favourite
Our recent survey saw Whitehaven Beach voted Australia’s best beach. Planning a trip there soon? Here’s what to expect.
- February 2020
The survey also noted that most Aussies (86%) believe our country has the best beaches in the world, and that nearly half (48%) think Queensland has the nicest among them.
But first, why does Whitehaven Beach consistently top best beach lists? What exactly makes it so special?
For many, it’s the sand. Made from 98 per cent pure white silica; impossibly fine; and, because it doesn’t retain heat, never too hot to stand on – the sand at Whitehaven truly is worth a trip alone.
But it would be impossible not to also mention the sheer sight of Whitehaven. A 7km stretch, its bright white beach swirls its way through turquoise, blue and green water, setting a scene that’s unlike anywhere else on the planet.
Whitehaven can be found on Whitsunday Island, a car-, hotel- and restaurant-free island in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and the largest of the Whitsundays’ 74 islands.
The most popular way to get to Whitehaven is by water, but, if you have a little more cash to splash, opt for a seaplane or chopper.
And finally, Whitehaven’s appeal is largely due to its cleanliness. Part of the Whitsundays Islands National Park, the beach adopts sustainable practices and has been voted one of the most eco-friendly beaches in the world.
Things to do at Whitehaven Beach
There are plenty of ways to experience Whitehaven, but one of the cheapest and most convenient is by booking a full or half-day Whitsundays cruise. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, turtles and, depending on the season, whales.
Once on Whitehaven, you can of course relax, wading into crystal clear waters, strolling on powdery soft sand or snapping to your heart’s content, but if you’re up for a little exploring, head to the lookout at Tongue Point.
Reached by a short bushwalk, it offers views of Hill Inlet, an inlet showcasing the best of Whitehaven’s colourful swirls, and is a prime spot for a quintessential Whitsundays ‘gram shot.
