Western Australia occupies around one-third of Australia’s total landmass, a mighty 2.5 million-plus square kilometres spanning unspoiled wilderness, cosmopolitan cities, ancient Indigenous sites and more sun-drenched coastline than you can shake a surfboard at.
Ask any Sandgroper (WA resident) what they love most about their state and chances are they'll mention the beaches. Whether you’re a surfer, swimmer, snorkeller or sunbather, you’ll find the perfect place to lay your towel here.
Swim with the world’s biggest fish, the gentle whale shark, at World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, share the shore with kangaroos at Lucky Bay near Esperance, or meet the impossibly cute quokka on Rottnest Island. Whale-watchers are in luck too: tours operate the length of the coast from May to December.
But WA's charms go beyond the aquatic. Its wildflower season is internationally famous, with more than 12,000 species bursting into bloom between June and November, starting in the north and sweeping down to the south coast. Hashtag: flowerpower!
Picturesque capital Perth and historic port city Fremantle offer culture, fun and outdoor attractions in equal measure, while food and wine lovers will flip for the sensational vino and fresh produce of the South West, especially around ever-popular Margaret River.
