Tokyo to Cottesloe: 5 favourite beaches
Looking for some fun in the sun? Plan your next beach holiday as we show you five of our all-time favourite beaches from around the world.
- June 2018
Main Beach, Byron Bay
Land in Byron Bay and it feels like everyone was born in a blissed out, tanned and beachy state. Home to a dedicated surf culture and the most easterly point of Australia, Byron’s beaches are a wonderland to the eyes, with expansive horizons, hypnotic sunrises and sunsets, and locals doing yoga on the sand. Don your bikini and dive into those divine waters of Main Beach, the most popular beach, or settle into the more secluded Watego’s Beach. Wander into the quirky township after your swim for some excellent Mexican food – no need to change. Byron rolls to its own laidback beat.
Waikiki Beach, Honolulu
When you think of pure, beachy good times, Hawaii rockets to mind with its outrageous turquoise waters, gentle mountain backdrop and ukulele soundtrack. Slap on that sunscreen and weave your way down to the warm waters of Honolulu’s Waikiki Beach, where gentle waves will have you bouncing like a marionette. The shore is ringed by glamorous hotels, the sand is bright and clean, the weather and the atmosphere is total relaxation.
Cottesloe Beach, Perth
Just a 15-minute drive from Perth, Cottesloe Beach in Western Australia is an idyllic beach with its bright white sand, warm Indian Ocean waters and fringe of shady Norfolk pines. Dive in for a swim or bodyboard the gentle waters, then spread your towel out on the surrounding terraced lawns for a lazy afternoon before throwing on something casual and enjoying that ocean sunset from one of the beach-view restaurants nearby.
Isshiki Beach, Tokyo
When you’re packing for a trip to Tokyo, your bikini might not be the first thing you reach for, but Japan has a number of resorts and coastal towns to dive into. A two-hour train ride from Tokyo will get you to Zushi, home to a popular beach. A 20-minute bus ride on, you’ll hit the less populated and super-cute Isshiki Beach, surrounded by picturesque green hills.
Bondi Beach, Sydney
If you want to insert yourself into the ultimate Australian beach postcard, grab your brightest bathers and head to Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach. The stuff of legend never fails to disappoint – or attract a crowd. A warm sunny day (not a rare thing in Sydney) lures flocks of tanned and gorgeous Sydneysiders to swim, lounge or parade along this iconic beach, surrounded by cafes, cliffs and rolling lawns. If you want to escape the crowds, Bronte and Tamarama are quieter and no less beautiful.
