While Cambodia’s bustling capital has plenty to offer, a treasure trove of adventures also awaits you just beyond Phnom Penh. From picturesque islands to centuries-old ancient temples, these easy daytrips are the perfect way to immerse yourself in the rich Cambodian culture – past and present.

Experience Traditional Silk Weaving at Koh Dach

Just an hour's tuk-tuk ride from the city and a short ferry across the Mekong, you are transported to idyllic Koh Dach. Popularly known as Silk Island, the main attraction here is the silk weavers who produce traditional Cambodian karmas and other silk souvenirs. Head to Koh Oknha Tei Village to try weaving the sampot chang kben, the traditional lower body wrap. And relax – Cambodian style – with food and drink in a rented beach hut by the river. Koh Dach is at its most picturesque when the river is high, outside of the dry season.

Enjoy breathtaking views from Oudong Mountain

Oudong is one of the most accessible daytrips from Phnom Penh. The hour drive along rural lanes takes you past farming villages and lush rice fields before you arrive at the foothills of Oudong Mountain. Temples, shrines and pagodas dot the landscape and give a glimpse of what was once the country’s royal residence and capital for over 250 years. Expect to climb 500 steps to get to the three main stupas on the hill. The spectacular view at the top is worth the effort.

Venture off the beaten track to Angkor Borei and Phnom Da

If you’re looking for a quieter archaeological site, Angkor Borei is only a 2.5-hour taxi ride from the city. This less-frequented temple was once an important religious and political settlement of the Kingdom of Funan. Artefacts date back to 400 BC and include some of the oldest examples of Khmer inscriptions and sculptures. To the south is the hill of Phnom Da, which houses a pre-Angkorian temple and offers stunning views of the surrounding village. The wet months transform Phnom Da into an island, and the approach by boat adds to the site’s photo-worthiness!

Explore the ruins of Ta Phrom and Phnom Chisor at Tonle Bati

Lake Tonle Bati is a popular picnic and fishing spot, where you can rent small water huts on stilts for a relaxing afternoon by the lake. It’s also home to two significant temples. Ta Phrom, not to be mistaken for the Lara Croft Temple of the same name in Siem Reap, is a smaller version built in the same period. Towering trees surround the ruins, which feature well-preserved carvings and bas reliefs. For stunning views of the countryside, head up to the temple at the top of Phnom Chisor hill.

Soak up the charm of Kampong Cham

A city north of Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham enjoys the unassuming pace of a small village, and its quiet streets make it easy to explore. Try a leisurely cycle around the city or a relaxing stroll along the waterfront promenade. Take your time to savour the colourful architecture or sample new flavours at the undercover market. Add its iconic bamboo bridge, the hilltop pagoda Wat Hanchey, and views from the Old French Lighthouse, and Kampong Cham is a perfect retreat from city life.
