City, beaches and mountains; Thailand has something for everyone

There are few places on earth that offer such a vast array of travel options as Thailand. With its intoxicating capital, verdant hinterlands, gorgeous beaches and the Thai people’s reputation for tolerance and sense of fun, it’s no wonder that the country continues to top best-destination lists.

Bangkok is usually the first port of call, after which it’s easy to escape to the countryside or a tropical island. Head north to the ancient cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to encounter jungle-clad mountains, indigenous hill-tribe culture and flourishing art scenes. West of Bangkok is Kanchanaburi, the mountainous region bordering Myanmar, which offers rustic adventure and a history lesson on the River Kwai and its infamous railway. When it comes to beaches, there are plenty to choose from: Phuket, with its sweeping bays and sophisticated tourist scene and Krabi with its spectacular limestone cliffs are just two popular resort destinations. It’s impossible to sample all that Thailand has to offer in one stay – which is why most people find themselves returning.
